Preparing for Your Surgery
To ensure your safety and the best possible outcome, please carefully follow these pre-surgery instructions:
Eating & Drinking
- Do not eat or drink anything (including water or coffee) for 8 hours prior to your appointment.
- If you are receiving IV sedation (not general anesthesia), do not eat or drink for 4 hours before surgery.
Medications
- If you take routine medications, please consult with Dr. Loetscher prior to your surgery date.
- You may be instructed to take essential medications the morning of surgery with a small sip of water.
- If you are taking blood thinners (such as Coumadin or Plavix), special instructions will be provided during your consultation.
- If you are taking GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or similar), you will need to stop these medications prior to surgery due to their effect on gastric emptying. Please discuss timing and instructions with Dr. Loetscher in advance of your procedure.
Smoking
- Do not smoke for at least 12 hours before surgery.
- Ideally, reduce or stop smoking as far in advance as possible to promote better healing.
Day of Surgery Requirements
- A responsible adult must accompany you to your appointment and drive you home.
- You should not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours after anesthesia.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that can be rolled above the elbow and low-heeled shoes.
Personal Items
- Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures before your procedure.
- Do not wear lipstick, heavy makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
Health Changes
- If you develop a cold, sore throat, stomach upset, or any illness prior to your surgery, please contact our office.
