Chin Augmentation (Advancement Genioplasty)
Augmenting your chin can provide both esthetic and functional benefits. By performing a sliding osteotomy of your lower jaw, the chin is brought forward, vastly improving the esthetics of a weak chin. It also tightens up the neck line and neck muscles. It is very cosmetic in that by advancing muscles and bone, it looks very natural.
Functionally, it significantly opens up your airway. Many people with a weak chin, have a more narrow pharyngeal airway. When the bony chin is advanced, it pulls the muscles forward, improving your airway. This helps people prone to sleep apnea breath better, and is actually one of the treatments for sleep apnea.
This 30 minute procedure is done from inside your mouth, under general anesthesia, and in the office. Recovery is relatively quick, the only complication so to speak of is swelling and some mild pain for a couple of days. The next day you are ambulatory and can drive. Facial swelling may persist for up to two weeks or so.
As the above results illustrate, this is an excellent adjunctive cosmetic procedure, which we do on a very regular basis. Patients have all have a high degree of satisfaction with this as well.
An alternative technique from sliding the bone forward is to slip a silicone implant in between your lower jawbone and chin muscles. This is a simpler procedure, less swelling. However the cosmetic improvement typically is not as ideal. It also has less longevity, due to the fact that with time the implant can become inflamed, or resorb some of the lower jawbone it sits on.
Facial liposuction is a very common and popular procedure. It is designed for the permanent removal of fatty tissue from your cheeks, chin, and neck. It is an elective procedure that allows the surgeon to remove undesirable, subcutaneous fat in specific areas that do not respond to diet and exercise.
Patients with good skin tone who have fatty deposits receive the best results from facial liposuction. It is not a treatment for obesity. If weight gain occurs following liposuction, the fat will be deposited in areas that have not been treated. The procedure can be repeated, if necessary. To maintain the safety of the procedure, there is a limit on how much can be done at one time. A variety of factors can affect the results: physical condition, genetic makeup, diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol intake, and skin elasticity.
Facial liposuction is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis in a hospital or surgical center. The surgeon makes small (less than 1/2 inch), discreet incisions in the face or neck. A cannula is inserted in a small incision and attached to a suction machine. The procedure may take an hour or more.
The results of liposuction are permanent. If you were to gain a large amount of weight, you might note rippling in the treated areas, depending on your skin elasticity. Following liposuction, the scar will go through a maturation process. During the first eight to twelve weeks, they may be red and possibly raised. The scars will mature over six to twelve months and become pale, flat, and soft. You may experience numbness, burning, and/or tingling around the incision site. These symptoms are almost always temporary. Please let us know if you are prone to keloid scars.
Botox and Fillers
BOTOX® treatment is a revolutionary approach to reversing the affects facial wrinkles. Crow’s feet, worry lines and laugh lines can all be a thing of the past. These are referred to as dynamic wrinkle lines and all are treatable with this procedure. Cosmetic denervation is the process of injecting botox into the tiny facial muscles that create the wrinkles.
To better understand your overall health, we will evaluate your medical history prior to surgery. In addition, a complete examination of your eyes is made in order to decide the most effective injection sites. All issues and concerns will be discussed.
The areas that will be treated are marked and digital photographs are taken in order to determine the amount of improvement after surgery.
The BOTOX® Procedure
BOTOX® injections are performed without anesthesia because it is virtually painless. Only a very small sting is felt when the injections are made. The effects are not permanent and may need to be repeated two to three times per year to retain the effects. Research has suggested, however, that long term use of the injections leads to a longer duration of each treatment’s effect. Patients over the age of 65 may not experience as dramatic of results. Botox is only useful in treating expression lines and cannot be used to repair sagging skin caused by aging.
After the operation patients may experience slight bruising around the area that quickly fades. Normal activities can be performed immediately. Possible side effects are temporary weakness of nearby muscles or in rare cases an eyelid may droop. BOTOX® is completely reversible so any side effect is only a temporary condition. The doctor will explain all risks associated at the time of your consultation.
Juvederm® is the one of the latest dermal fillers introduced to the U.S. market by Allergan, the company which manufactures Botox. It is a hyaluronic acid based filler similar to Restylane®. However, JUVÉDERM® injectable gel employs its unique manufacturing process to provide the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any currently available hyaluronic acid dermal filler for long-lasting results. This advanced manufacturing process also creates a smooth consistency gel that flows consistently and easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel.
Recently approved by the FDA, Juvéderm® injectable gel is a “next-generation” dermal filler. The smooth consistency gel helps to instantly restore your skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).
With Juvederm®, the results are immediate with minimal downtime. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last up to 6 months or more. Juvederm can be used virtually anywhere on the face, with most success in the lips, nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth), and the marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth downward to the jawline).
